The event was jointly organised with H.E. Daovy Vongxay , Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in Geneva, who serves as President of the Third Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

The workshop was held within the framework of the annual Protection of Civilians (PoC) Week, organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC) and the Embassy of Switzerland in Ethiopia. It brought together representatives of African States, international organisations, diplomatic missions, and experts working in the field of humanitarian disarmament and civilian protection.

Discussions focused on strengthening awareness of the Convention on Cluster Munitions, encouraging wider accession and ratification by African States, and enhancing cooperation to ensure the effective implementation of the Convention's provisions. Participants also exchanged experiences and best practices relating to the protection of civilians from the humanitarian consequences of cluster munitions.

The workshop reaffirmed the commitment of participating States and partners to advancing humanitarian disarmament objectives and promoting universal adherence to the Convention across the African continent.
